The short version: SoundCloud’s own apps only play SoundCloud. Once you’ve converted a track to MP3 it stops being tied to the platform, and any music app on any device will open it. That’s the whole appeal of having the file rather than a saved stream.
This guide covers what SoundCloud’s players do, where your downloads go on each device, and which apps are worth using to play them.
What SoundCloud’s own players do
There are three, and none of them plays files from your own drive.
- The mobile app. Streams the catalog, and with a subscription it saves tracks for offline listening. Those saved tracks are not files you can move: SoundCloud stores them inside the app, and they vanish if you sign out or uninstall.
- The desktop player. SoundCloud describes it as a standalone window that launches from your desktop, dock or taskbar so it doesn’t fight with your browser tabs. It’s still streaming, and it’s limited to Chrome, Brave and Edge.
- The web player. The site itself, which is also what the embed player puts on other people’s websites.
Third-party SoundCloud players have come and gone over the years, usually breaking whenever the API changes. If you want something that keeps working, a downloaded MP3 in a normal music app is the safer bet. Grab one with the SoundCloud to MP3 converter.
Offline in the app vs an MP3 you keep
| Offline in the SoundCloud app | A downloaded MP3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Costs | Go or Go+ subscription | Nothing |
| Plays in other apps | No | Yes |
| Survives cancelling | No | Yes |
| Works on a car USB or DJ stick | No | Yes |
| Catalog | Everything in your Library | Public tracks you convert |
If you’re deciding whether to subscribe, our Go vs Go+ comparison covers what each tier adds, and downloading SoundCloud Go songs explains the offline feature in detail.
Where your downloads land
Android
Files go to the Downloads folder. Any local music app picks them up: Musicolet, Poweramp and VLC are the usual recommendations, and Android’s own Files app plays a track on a tap. If a new download doesn’t show up in your music app, it’s normally waiting on a media scan, so reopening the app fixes it.
iPhone and iPad
Safari saves downloads into the Files app, under Downloads. You can play them from there, or open them in VLC or Documents for a proper library view. To get them into the Music app, sync them from a computer.
Windows and Mac
MP3s open in Windows Media Player, Apple Music, VLC, foobar2000 or whatever you already use. This is also where you’d tag files properly before loading them onto a phone or USB stick.
Car stereos
Most head units read MP3 from a USB stick and little else. Stick to MP3 rather than WAV or FLAC, keep file names short and plain, and put everything in one folder rather than a deep tree.
DJ software
rekordbox, Serato and Traktor all read MP3, and rekordbox also supports FLAC, ALAC, WAV and AIFF. For club USBs, WAV is the safest format on older players, which is covered in WAV vs MP3 vs FLAC.
Which format to download for playback
For playing on a phone, in a car or on a speaker, MP3 is the right answer. It’s small, it plays everywhere, and since SoundCloud streams are compressed to begin with, a bigger file won’t sound better. Use the MP3 converter for that.
Producing or DJing with the track is the exception. Then an uncompressed WAV or a lossless FLAC copy is easier to work with, because editing and re-exporting won’t add a second round of compression.
Tag your files or you’ll lose them
Converted tracks often arrive with a messy title and no artist, album or artwork, which makes a large library hard to navigate. Free tag editors like Mp3tag on Windows or Kid3 on Mac and Linux fix that in bulk. If you want the original artwork, our cover art downloader pulls it at full resolution.
FAQ
Is there an official SoundCloud MP3 player?
SoundCloud has a mobile app and a desktop player, but neither plays MP3 files you already have. They stream from SoundCloud only. To play a downloaded MP3 you use an ordinary music app.
Can I play SoundCloud offline without paying?
Offline listening inside the SoundCloud app needs a Go or Go+ subscription, and those saved tracks only play in the app. A downloaded MP3 plays anywhere, on any device, with no subscription.
What's the best app to play downloaded SoundCloud tracks on Android?
Anything that reads your local files. Musicolet, Poweramp and VLC are common picks, and Android's own file manager will play a track straight from your Downloads folder.
How do I play SoundCloud MP3s on an iPhone?
Downloads land in the Files app. You can play them there, or import them into VLC, Documents or the Music app through your computer so they sit alongside your library.
Can I use SoundCloud tracks in DJ software?
Yes. rekordbox, Serato and Traktor all read MP3, and rekordbox also supports WAV, AIFF and FLAC. Go+ subscribers can stream SoundCloud into some DJ apps instead, though that needs a live connection.
Why won't my car stereo play the file?
Most car stereos read MP3 from a USB stick but get picky about folder structure, file names and other formats. Convert to MP3 rather than WAV or FLAC, keep names short and put the files in a plain folder.
