How to Add Tags on SoundCloud

Step-by-step guide to adding tags on SoundCloud on desktop and mobile, plus how to edit tags on existing tracks and how many tags to use.

Adding tags to a SoundCloud track takes under a minute once you know where the field is. This guide covers both desktop and mobile, plus how to edit tags on tracks you already uploaded.

Need tags to add? Generate a set for your genre with the free SoundCloud Tag Generator.

How to add tags on SoundCloud (desktop)

  1. Log in to SoundCloud and go to your track, or start a new upload.
  2. On an existing track, click the three-dot menu and choose Edit, or open the track and select Edit track.
  3. Find the Genre field and set your main genre.
  4. Below or beside it, locate the Additional tags field.
  5. Type a tag and press Enter or comma to add it. Repeat for each tag.
  6. Click Save changes.

Your tags are now live and feeding SoundCloud's search and recommendations.

How to add tags on SoundCloud (mobile)

The mobile app supports basic uploads, but tag editing is more reliable in a mobile browser:

  1. Open a browser on your phone and go to the SoundCloud website.
  2. Request the desktop site from your browser menu if the edit screen is limited.
  3. Open your track and tap Edit.
  4. Set the Genre, then add keywords in the Additional tags field.
  5. Save your changes.

If you upload from the app, set your genre during upload and add or refine tags later from the browser edit screen.

How to edit tags on an existing track

You are not locked in. Open any track you have uploaded, go to Edit, and change the genre or additional tags at any time. Editing tags is one of the easiest ways to give an underperforming track a second chance, so revisit older uploads and tighten their tags.

How many tags should you add?

Fill your available slots with accurate tags. A balanced set is one primary genre, three to five sub-genre or style tags, and two to four mood or context tags. Avoid stuffing tags that do not describe the track, because irrelevant tags push you into the wrong recommendations. See the full breakdown in the SoundCloud tags guide.

What tags should you use?

Use a mix of genre, sub-genre, and mood keywords that match your sound. If you are not sure where to start, the SoundCloud Tag Generator builds a tuned set by genre in one click. For genre-specific packs you can copy and paste, see SoundCloud tags by genre.
